Showing damage
A labour group needed to make lengthy submissions to an administrative tribunal detailing the long and short term implications of an arbitrator’s award, with the goal of having the award set aside. The information and data to be submitted was extensive and complex, yet vital to understanding the serious flaws in the award. While there was a strong legal case, getting the tribunal to grasp the factual matters and future impacts was essential in securing a favourable decision.
Case Lab was engaged to assist in developing a presentation that would be delivered by several people over three days of hearings. Counsel informed us of the issues that needed to be addressed and we worked with a committee to develop exhibits and presentation slides. We began by mapping the entire case to ensure that all the concepts and facts were accounted for. We then worked with the committee to create a logical and effective storyboard highlighting the strongest material. We then project managed the creation of slides by committee members, developed key exhibits and fine-tuned the final presentation. The result was a very persuasive presentation that led to the tribunal quashing the award and ordering a new arbitration to resolve the dispute.
Showing impacts
An organization was making submissions involving long-term economic, demographic and fiscal data. As part of these submissions, the organization needed to explain the complex interrelations between various policies and their probable future impacts. Representatives and counsel for the organization had been allotted little time to make its presentation and were having a difficult time developing one given the audience’s level of knowledge.
After reviewing the material, Case Lab determined that several key concepts could be explained quickly by using animation in place of standard graphs and charts. Since a major objective of the presentation was to demonstrate effects over time, animations were particularly suitable for displaying the sort of data that was involved. After creating these animations and building the presentation around them, it was possible to deliver the entire demonstration in less than the allotted time. This gave the organization valuable time for questions and answers, for which we developed several supplementary presentations to address potential areas of misunderstanding. The result was that the organization’s submissions were well received and were attributed with a favourable outcome.
Showing complexity
A litigant involved in a protracted dispute needed to provide background information and regular updates on the case to media, shareholders and employees. There were several complex, technical issues at the heart of the matter that were difficult to explain and therefore briefings were a challenge. The party and counsel were spending increasing amounts of time clearing up misunderstandings and needed to improve the quality of information that was being provided. To achieve this, Case Lab was engaged to develop presentation slides and online materials.
After reviewing the materials with the client and counsel, we determined that audiences could be walked through several of the more complicated issues with the assistance of an interactive application that could either be used in presentations or that users could operate themselves over the internet. By consolidating the available material into a logical, self-explanatory format we then proceeded to develop a type of animated presentation where users and presenters could “drill-down” into any details that needed further explanation. The result was that the information and the client’s position became significantly easier to comprehend and it was possible to have clearer, richer, and more frequent communications with stakeholders.
